Started in 1982 with a single vessel, Mermaid Marine Australia Ltd (MMA) has grown substantially since listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1999 to become Australia’s largest marine services provider to the offshore oil and gas industry.

In their search to find larger premises for their expanding company, MMA discovered the old historic Endeavor Shed just up the coast from their original offices in Fremantle. The Endeavor Shed, specially constructed for the building of the HM Bark Endeavor Replica, would require considerable renovation to transform a simple corrugated shed to a fully functioning, multi level work environment.

Habitat 1 worked with Mermaid and the building owner to create 4 floors of offices, multiple meeting areas, open plan workstations, lunch room, function room, tea preps, lift, amenities areas and a full wall of glazing to the facade facing the ocean.

The client wanted to create an open and transparent working environment for their different operational departments.Adjacencies were critical for efficient communication, and were achieved by creating “pods” of workstations for each group. The use of glass for all offices around the pods supported the collaborative philosophy of the client. Open interconnecting stairs allowed for quick movement from department to department, as well as creating a central feature throughout the space.

Key materials in the fitout include Corten wall panelling to the lift cores, spotted gum wall panelling, custom screens fabricated from solid spotted gum timber and steel and European designed light fixtures.

The end result was a sophisticated and timeless space, with an excess of natural light and amazing views straight out over the Indian Ocean.
